As we enter the second semester of the year, we are approaching the end of the school year. For most students, that means huge tests, lots of work, and summer break before heading back to school again. For seniors, though, this is it. This is our last year of high school. After graduation, we will each go on to live our lives and step into adulthood.
This is a huge step in our lives, and there is no completely right or wrong way to go about it. These next few months are going to go by quickly—or at least that’s what we’re all told. As we start on this wild ride, there are a few things we can do to make sure we aren’t behind once we step across that stage.
First, it helps to have a baseline idea of what you want to do. Be realistic. In order to do anything, you need some kind of outline or plan. It’s not the smartest option to enter the adult world—where people expect you to somewhat know what you’re doing—while being completely unorganized. No one will ever be a “perfect adult,” but we should at least strive to have an idea of what we’re doing and a somewhat solid plan.
There are many different paths you can take after high school. Some of us may want to join the armed forces, some want to pursue higher education, and others might jump straight into the workforce. As long as you have a plan and it’s realistic, that alone can help you be more successful and organized in whatever you choose to do.
Regardless of the path you take, there are some basic skills that are essential for life. These include knowing how to cook simple meals, do your laundry, and keep your living space clean and organized. As kids, these things are often taken care of by our caretakers. Once you begin living on your own, however, these skills become crucial in order to take care of yourself.
Another important thing to learn is how to be financially educated and independent. Getting a job and earning money to pay bills is a major responsibility. It’s important to understand what a budget is and how to make one, how to earn and save money, and what a credit score is—and how to start building one. You don’t have to be the most financially educated person in the world, but you do need to be financially knowledgeable. Otherwise, you may find yourself in trouble without knowing where your money is going or what you’re doing with it.
On a more psychological level, our minds have changed so much up to this point. As we grow older, we gain maturity and need to start taking accountability for our actions. Our caretakers won’t always be there for us, and once we leave home, we need to be able to take care of ourselves. Not just physically—like doing chores—but also emotionally and socially, such as knowing how to communicate respectfully with others.
Lastly, one of the most important things to do before stepping into the real world is learning to love and be yourself. Having self-confidence and self-love is one of the most powerful things a person can have. Try to find your own groove. If you aren’t like everyone else, that’s okay—in fact, it’s a great thing. Being confident in who you are can take you far in life. Be creative and don’t be afraid to do things differently when the opportunity arises. You never know what doors it may open.
Going into adulthood can be nerve-wracking, but there are many people willing to support you and help guide you along this new path. Keeping these ideas in mind can help make the transition smoother. Most importantly, remember that there is no single right or wrong way to become an adult. Give yourself grace and patience—after all, this is everyone’s first time trying to figure it out.
