Warhorse power lifters finish season at state meet

For three of the powerlifting Warhorses, March 22 was not only their final meet, but the most important one of the season. Senior Leo Perez and juniors Kutter Schmidt and Benny Cisneros all traveled to the state powerlifting meet in Abilene.

“I got sixth place,” Perez said. “I feel accomplished because it was pretty intense but I got to go to state and that’s all I care about.”

Overall, the Warhorses did a great job on getting this far. This year the powerlifting brought an alternate in case the first or second place winners got hurt. Unfortunately, Cisneros didn’t get to lift, but all of the boys made it home injury-free and with new experiences in the sport that they love.

“It was an amazing feeling to lift at state,” Schmidt said. “I was a little nervous, but overall it was an awesome experience and I hope to do it again next year.”

With the season the returning power lifters had this year, it would only be tradition to have them return to state next year. Until then, the boys have plenty of time for the hard work, practice, and dedication it takes to get there.
