Principal Juan Gonzalez began his position as DHS’s head administrator this week, replacing Interim Daryl Wendle. Students were gathered Monday in the gymnasium for respectiv introductions and farewells.

After a short introduction by Wendle, Gonzalez shared his experience as an administrator, and his excitement to join the campus.

“I have been an educator for more than twenty years, first as a middle school special education teacher and athletic coach, then as assistant principal at Victoria ISD. Next I worked as a highschool principal in Austin for 9 years and most recently as a middle school assistant principal in San Antonio ISD,” Principal Gonzalez said. “I realized very quickly that I have been welcomed into a very special place. A family if you will.”

Gonzalez was selected by a search committee after months of deliberation, chosen in part for his enthusiasm and vision for Devine’s future.

“Devine High School has a rich tradition of excellence in the classroom, while showcasing superior strength, spirit, and sportsmanship in extracurricular activities, on and off the proverbial field.” Principal Gonzalez. “I am, whoever, overwhelmed at the opportunities that lay before us to achieve even greater academic excellence, state wide recognition, and national relevance.”

Wendle began the assembly by giving his farewells, though he clarified he would make a habit to be on campus more.

“It’s been eight and a half years since I was here at this highschool as a principal, so it was fun getting to be your interim,” Wendle said. “I’m not gonna be far away, just down the road.”
