NHS goes crazy for cans

National Honors Society members have been collecting non-perishable foods to help others who don’t have anything to feed themselves or even their own children. The food pantry is asking for more food at this time of year due to the holiday season.

“Its very helpful to our food pantry during the holiday season because this time of the year they are usually low on food items.” President of NHS Abbie Capps said.

Each member of NHS has been told to communicate with his or her fellow classmates to help with this organization to send to the Devine Food Pantry.

“ I think that it is very important that everyone participates in bringing canned food for the pantry. Not only is it helping all the people in need, but it is also just the right thing to do.” Junior Addie Trojanowski said.

Any type of non-perishable food with the expiration date is well capable of being donated to the Devine Food Pantry.

“The feeling of knowing that you are helping others is the best thing in the world,” junior Sarah Patteson said. “Especially for those who are alone on the holidays.”

In hopes that more people will donate, Mrs. Shirley Wimmett has offered to take off 25 cents for each book fine that a student has on his or her school library book. Also, Mrs. Debbie Petty offered to take a whole dollar off of a purchase of a yearbook or senior ad for every non-perishable food that is brought to donate.

“It was a pleasure giving back to the community that has given us so much,” Junior Alexandra Shields said. “The fact that Mrs.Wimmet had helped us bring in even more cans is such a big help for this food drive.”

Members of NHS will stop their annual food drive on Friday, Dec. 16. Food donations are always accepted but will have to be taken to the Devine Food Pantry directly, rather than through the school.

“Our NHS members are being very generous with their donations and supporting the Devine Program with our community service project of the year,” Capps said.
