Shattered Dreams is an educational experience that reminds everyone the dangers of drinking and driving. The “Shattered Dreams” program involves the dramatization of an alcohol related crash on or near a high school campus, complete with police and EMS response, emergency room treatment, family notifications, and the arrest and booking of the driver.
The Bexar County DWI Task Force on Underage Drinking developed the program in 1998 as an expansion of the “Every 15 minutes” program introduced in Chico, California. “Every 15 minutes” is named so to signify the number of alcohol- related fatalities in the United States. On March 8 the FCCLA, Crime Stoppers and Publications Department will be holding a Shattered Dreams presentation. From 8:15 a.m. to noon every “15 minutes” a students will “die” in a drinking and driving accident. Then, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. the “accident” will occur outside the Activity Center. From 2:20 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. the presentation will be held in the gym. The community is invited to view this presentation put on by these organizations.
“I think it is a good thing to be doing,” FCS teacher Ms. Jackson said. “It will help kids think before they get into a car with someone under the influence, the timing is great because it is right before Spring Break.”
