First Devine Cross Country meet

For the first time in 25 years, Devine Cross Country hosted their own local meet, which took place near the practice field.

“Hosting a meet in Devine seemed like a great opportunity for the school and community to come watch a sport very few people get the opportunity to see,” Coach Khera Vay said.

Many members of the community, parents, coaches and friends came to support and help with putting on the meet. It took multiple days and weeks to figure out how exactly the meet would be ran. The course was constantly taken care of, making sure there was no trash and the flag barriers stayed in place.

“Coach Vay and Coach Beaty did an awesome job putting on this meet and making sure it ran smoothly,” Coach Jim Sessions said.

Overall, 21 teams attended and 614 athletes registered to run. Varsity girls and junior varsity girls placed first as a team with many individuals placing high.

“It was fun being out there getting to race so many other schools and still placing first as a team,” junior Alexis Shook said.

Following this year, there is hope of another Cross Country meet being held in the years to come with more teams and more runners competing. Having this meet under their belt, being confident in how the team preformed and everyone coming together to help just shows how great of Devine is as a community.

“Hosting another cross country meet would be amazing,” Vay said. “I feel like we can handle more teams as everything ran smoothly.”
