Warhorse football team finishes season as Bi-District Champions
January 6, 2015
This past season for the Warhorse football team has had its ups and downs, complete with a 8-4 record.
“The boys did an amazing job starting out 2-3 but rebounding and turning out undefeated district and Bi-District champions,” Coach Evan Eads said. “It was a testimony to their toughness and hard work. There were doubters and not enough people in the stands but I think it was a special year and they proved a lot of people wrong.”
Toughness and hard work are only a few things that got those boys pumped up to get on the field.
“The fact that we are playing for each other and not for ourselves is one of the things that we think of before a game,” senior Benny Cisneros said. “We like knowing that we will stay together and overcome adversity,”
The Warhorses played several teams that had never been in their district before and continued to play their hardest.
“The first few games before district gave us a run for our money,” senior Sonny Hernandez said. “But its good to know a small town like us can handle the big towns.”
Proving to themselves and to their fans that they can defeat 6A schools got the crowd more involved. Parents and cheerleaders decorated the town with streamers and posters showing off their Warhorse Nation pride.
“It was really fun and I enjoyed hanging the streamers,” senior Julia Martinez said. “I’m glad I got to show school spirit.”
All of the boys hard work paid off when it came to early morning practices, scrimmages, and long afternoon practices. The farthest the Warhorses got this year was Bi- District champions.
“It felt really good to bring a district and Bi- District title to our school,” senior Joe Guerrero said. “I’m proud that I could help Devine get back on track as far as playoffs go, because Devine is known for going a couple of rounds deep in the playoffs.”
During the Hondo game, the Warhorses received a reward for defeating their rivals. Devine and Hondo have been rivals for years and this year Devine was chosen to play in the Great American Rivalry. After the game was over, two young marines presented the entire football team with the Rivalry series championship plaque. Joe Guerrero was chosen as this year’s MVP of the night for fighting next to his teammates.
“It was a great feeling because it’s not all the time we get nominated for that game, and it was that much sweeter because it was a game we had to really work hard for,” Guerrero said. “Our other backs were injured and I was the last running back, it felt good that Coach Quisenberry could count on our team with two running backs to get the win.”
Winning and working as a team are what these boys did best, and with many years to come they plan on continuing their winning streaks and defeating the other teams to get to state.
