The once-state ranked Devine Arabians softball team finished their season with a tremendous 30-4 record, and a 10-0 record in district. In 10 district games, the girls only allowed 4 runs to be scored against them. In their warm up playoff game, the Arabians beat the number 12 state ranked team La Vernia 10-5.
“Getting 10-0 in district was a great accomplishment because it was an early goal of ours,” junior Casey Montalvo said. “We’re hoping to go very far in playoffs. The way we’re playing right now, nobody knows how far we’re going to go.”
The team scheduled a warm up game against La Vernia at the Lady Bear’s field. Coming from a tougher district and being a highly ranked team in the state, La Vernia was intended to be a good challenge to Devine’s ten game winning streak. The Arabians played with a playoff mentality, and didn’t take the Lady Bears lightly. The girls came out in the first inning and scored two runs to take an early lead. When La Vernia answered back with a homerun and a 3-2 lead within their first at-bat, Devine didn’t get rattled; they got even.
The Arabians kept their intensity up and played all seven innings with one hundred percent effort. Both teams battled to take the victory, however, the Arabians had the edge over the Lady Bears. The girls ended up scoring a total of 10 runs on LaVernia to their 5, and Devine won yet again.
“We have come such a long way from the beginning of the year, and playing against La Vernia on Thursday really was a test for us,” junior Ebonee Marquez said. “I am so excited to be heading for the playoffs. We are working hard and looking forward to big things happening for us in the 2013 playoffs.”
This Friday the girls will start the series playoff games against Raymondville. The girls will play in a double header in Calallen at 5:00 and 7:00. If the Arabians win both games they will be awarded with the Area title, and if the teams split the wins, game three will be on the following Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
