After finishing up a successful 2012 powerlifting year, the 2013 team has everything to prove.
This year, both the girls and guys powerlifting teams have more lifters than previous years, so excellence is at an all-time high and a higher level of competition is brought to the table.
This past weekend the boys and girls powerlifting teams lifted very well for their first meet of the season in Poteet.
“This was the biggest meet I’ve seen,” senior Johnnell Obaya said. “Over 15 schools competed, but it was fun and pretty good for our first meet.”
For the girls powerlifiting team, junior Victoria M. Hernandez took first place in her weight class lifting a total of 645 lbs.
“Both Arabian and Warhorse power lifting team opened the season with a bang,” senior Jasmine Leal said. “Everyone competed well by reaching and exceeding their personal goals this past weekend. I am super excited to continue my senior year with this great team.”
Seniors Johnnell and Jasmine both came in at fourth place, Johnnell lifting a total of 545 lbs. and Jasmine lifting 835 lbs. Junior Jessi Juarez came in at third place lifting a total of 665 lbs. and junior Shelby Carrillo placed fourth lifting 685 lbs.
Senior Sawyer Yandell took first place in his weight class lifting a total of 1,135 lbs.
Coming in at fourth place, senior Zach Monreal lifted 1,400 lbs. and junior Leo Perez placed fourth in his weight class lifting a total of 1,320 lbs.
