Fresh seems to be a reoccurring theme for the Arabian Basketball team this year. Not only do they have their fresh new gym, but they also have five freshmen playing on the varsity team.
“This is by far one of the youngest teams we have had in a while.” Head Coach Jim Sessions said, “They have a lot of potential to possibly make the playoffs”
With only one returning varsity member, the team has had the odds against them. Usually being a sophomore on Varsity is a big achievement in itself, but sophomore Alyssa Schmidt has had to take a bigger role and be the team leader.
“Last year I happened to be a freshmen on varsity, so I know exactly what these girls are going through,” Alyssa said.
With that being said, the girls have started off with a 5-10 record, but are keeping their heads and hopes high.
“These first few games are just to kind of get our team into the swing of things.” Alyssa said, “Our record will really start to matter once we get into district play.
The Arabians will begin their district play on Friday, Jan. 4 against the Crystal City Lady Javelinas. The team will have a fresh new calendar year to get off to a fresh start.
