Are rigorous classes worth the work
The pros and cons of taking dual credit and advance placement classes
October 29, 2014
Throughout a student’s high school career, they will take different classes. Some prove to be quite challenging. Today, high schools have so many diverse classes with large opportunities to offer. The most beneficial classes that schools can offer to students are Advanced Placement (AP) and dual credit classes. These classes are for students who excel and look forward to attending a college or university.
The AP program allows students to take college-level courses and exams and potentially earn college credit while still in high school. Specially trained high school teachers teach AP courses on the high school campus. Individual colleges grant course credits based on the placement test taken at the end of the year, but a score of 3 or higher is usually required.
Dual credit allows high school students to earn both high school and college credit by completing courses at their high school. Students must be classified as a junior or senior and credit is awarded when the student passes the course. College instructors, either on the high school campus or through online classes, usually teach dual credit.
AP and dual credit courses are very challenging and take a lot of effort, studying, and preparation to be successful in the course. Students often look back on these courses as some of the most challenging classes of their career, but also the classes that best prepared them for college. The advanced and faster learning environment gives students an early look at how college courses are for the future. These courses are a slight preparation to the vigorous studying that will come in college.
Completing a college course, while still in high school, helps out the student and their family financially. The student is able to take and complete college hours, without paying the full tuition and living fees at the same time. Completing these courses can also help students get their college degree sooner and start working on their profession.
Advanced placement and dual credit courses are both very challenging and rewarding. Although it is difficult at the time, these courses help out the student and are a great opportunity that high schools have to offer.
