National Honor Society induction honors exemplary students
October 20, 2014
Being inducted into the National Honor Society is a very prestigious honor, something that several of DHS’s students found out this past Thursday, Oct. 16. Devine held its annual induction ceremony that evening, and allowed a new generation of dedicated students into its chapter.
“It was such an honor to even be considered for such a prestigious club, and even more so to be invited into it,” junior Baylee Quisenberry said.
Students qualify for the society based on academic performance, leadership skills, and involvement in the school and community.
“I’m very happy to have qualified for this honor,” junior Garrett Rutkowksi said. “It’s such a distinguished society to be accepted into.”
While the majority of students accepted into the chapter are inducted as juniors, there are some exceptions. Cody Campbell was the only senior to be inducted at this year’s ceremony.
“I am so honored and glad that I was accepted into NHS despite the fact that I’m a senior,” Campbell said. During the ceremony, Principal Derrick Byrd recognized NHS sponsor Ms. Neva Sessions for her dedication to the society, as well as thanked temporary sponsor Mrs. Debi Petty for her hard work.
“I think that was my favorite part of the whole night,” Campbell said. “I love Ms. Sessions, and I’m glad that she was recognized just like we were.”
However, for seniors that were already a part of NHS, some serious work was to be done at the ceremony. Current members worked during and after the induction to keep everything running smoothly. The current NHS officers, consisting of Sarah Terrazas, Brooke Sumners, Taylor Chandler, and Amber Sliva, also performed the traditional candle lighting ceremony and helped induct the incoming members.
“I was kind of nervous to speak at first,” Chandler said. “But I really enjoyed welcoming the juniors into such an esteemed society that I’ve experienced firsthand.”
