Seniors compete in mock election for government class
January 6, 2015
Voting is an important aspect of any adult’s life, and students in Coach Evan Eads’ government classes got a little taste of what it’s like to campaign and vote in an election. For the past few weeks, students in all classes gathered in groups to form their own politcal parties, and discussed the issues they would like to see taken care of if they were in charge of the government.
“The kids had to create parties with four major stances, give speeches, and participate in debates,” Coach Eads said. “It was like a real election: they had to win primary and then a general election.”
The winner of the general election for president was senior Gavin Been, of the group deemed the “Casual Party”.
“I was pretty shocked that I won the election,” Been said. “I didn’t think I was going to win, even with all the hard work that went into the whole ordeal.”
There was plenty of hard work to go around for the process. Not only did each individual party have a poster and campaign to run, they also had to create signs and posters for the actual election.
“We plastered signs all over the school,” Been said. “I walked around talking about my stances on the different issues we had to face to anyone who would listen, especially those that were voting.”
The students enjoyed getting a look into the entire election process through their class.
“It was kind of crazy, learning what it takes to run in an election and to vote,” senior Jessica Gonzalez said. “It was a lot more work than what I thought went into it.”
Coach Eads and the students are all proud of the work they accomplished.
“They all did a very good job,” Coach Eads said. “It was the first year for campaigning and making posters and it’s a good standard to aim for next year.”
