The golf season kicked off on Monday, Feb. 4, when the girl’s team won first place at the first tournament of the season, which was hosted at home.

“This was the first tournament to start the season in Devine,” senior Kayla Busby said. “Normally, we go to Pleasanton for the first tournament of the season, but this time we got to enjoy it in Devine.”

Earning individual awards, Busby placed first and senior Shelby Spivey placed third.

“I was very excited and glad that I was able to get first place,” Busby said. “It was very nerve-wracking because there was this girl from Hondo that I knew shot almost the same as me at the last tournament.”

The boy’s golf team played in a tournament at the Riverside Golf Course in San Antonio the next day, placing sixth as a team.

“We were all a little rusty, since we were just coming back,” senior Noah Tumbarello said.

The teams have been practicing after school on the Devine Golf Course, both together and individually.

“We practiced for a week before the tournament,” Spivey said. “I also spend a couple of hours a day practicing on the golf course on my own.”

The team has high hopes to advance to the regional level together.

“I believe that we have a good chance at going to regionals,” Busby said. “As long as we keep practicing and work on what we need to.”
