Track season brings broken records

May 22, 2015

After taking district by storm and breaking records more than once, this year’s track and field teams are a group to remember. The varsity boys 800 meter relay consisting of senior Joe Guerrero, juniors Tyler Carter, Robert Martinez, and  sophomore Dillon Ricord, broke the current record for their race twice. At the meet Devine hosted, the boys came through and broke the record for the first time. The initial time to be broken was 1:30:60 when the boys ran through their time was 1:29:70, excitement  in their coaches face was what motivated them to the finish and leading to breaking yet another record.

“As soon as we ran through the finish line Coach Cozby nearly tackled us because he was so happy,” Guerrero said.

The boys practiced after school all week and on their own time, to achieve the time that they did.

“It takes a lot of team bonding, team work, practicing frequently, running until the distance doesn’t faze us, and always running further and harder than our competition,” Guerrero said.

It impressed the boys when they first broke the record but really made history when they ran at the Area track meet and beat it again going from 1:29:70 to a 1:29:40.

“It feels great and it is great to break the records that we did, the feeling of being a sophomore is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m thankful for my team and all our hard work,” Carter said.

The varsity boys relay team are not the only ones breaking records. Senior Josephine Guzman also broke a record that has been held in Devine since 2007. Previous runner Cara Patterson held the 800 record time of 2:16:75. At the meet held in Poteet  Josephine broke the record and set the new record to 2:15:50.

“It was an incredible feeling to break Cara’s record and accomplish my goals for  this season,” Guzman said. “I feel as if I left my mark here at Devine High.”
