Early in August the Arabians began the 2014 district season with scrimmages at Medina Valley and McCollum. Since then the Arabians have made leaps and bounds and overcome many obstacles that stood in their way.

“This season has really been a roller coaster ride,” head coach Leigh Anne McIver said. “We basically have a brand new team, but saying that, we have had some big wins and made playoffs while playing in this new, tougher district.”

The Arabians participated in three tournaments this season and took first place in the Jourdanton Varsity Tournament. Seniors Alyssa Schmidt and Destiny Carranza were named to the All-Tournament team.

“It was an honor to get selected,” Carranza said. “It was nice that both of our hard work paid off and got recognized.”

As the pre-season came to an end the Arabians suffered an unfortunate lose against Southwest. This loss, however, did not stop them from winning their first district game against the Lytle Pirates.

“Having lost that game against Southwest helped us to come out with a vengeance,” junior Edna Calame said. “It really got us fired up so we came out strong.”

Throughout the district season, they battled tough competition including Bandera, Boerne and Fredericksburg.

“Getting the win over Bandera in the first round was very exciting since they beat us in our tournament,” junior Kara Stacy.

Playing strong with heads held high, the girls began the second round of district with a bang. In their district 29-4A match up against the Lytle Pirates, the Arabians hosted a Dig Pink Night in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

“We were able to raise $4800 and combined with Lytle’s we donated over $5000 to the Sideout Foundation,” Coach McIver said.

After falling to Bandera in the second round, the girls came out with a huge win against Hondo. They then faced the Boerne Greyhounds where they won after a hard fought battle.

“The Hondo game was super exciting because they are our rivals,” sophomore Abbie Capps said. “It’s always nice to get the win over Hondo, especially in their house.”

Results from the Fredericksburg game were unavailable at press time. The Arabians are currently tied for third with the Bandera Bulldogs. There will be a playoff game on Friday Oct. 31 at 4:30 in Hondo to determine who will enter playoffs in the third place seed for District 29-4A.
