With the season coming to a close, two Arabian powerlifters traveled to Corpus Christi to compete in the state meet. Senior Victoria Hernandez and junior Shelby Carrillo gave it their all for their last meet of the season.

“I have high expectation for myself for next year and I will work a lot harder to achieve more goals and hopefully set a few records.” Carrillo said.

Hernandez and Carrillo reflect upon their successful seasons as they come to an end during the last and most important meet of the year.

“State was my last meet and it was quite nerve-wracking. I learned a lot of great things throughout the season and used them to compete,” Carrillo said. “Being ranked 7th in state is not where I want to be but there is always next year and room for more improvement.”

Although Hernandez didn’t place at state, the opportunity to simply compete in the meet is enough for her. She intends to apply the lessons she learned throughout her years of powerlifting to life after graduation.

“Being able to compete at state was a great accomplishment for me. Not everybody can say ‘I went to state and competed’,” Hernandez said. “Even though I didn’t place, it was still good to know I went and gave it all I had on to the platform.”
