Representing Devine with great pride, senior Warhorse football player Zach Monreal was given an amazing opportunity to travel to Tampa, Florida to play in the Blue Grey combine football game on Jan. 12. Due to his outstanding performance and impressive stats over the 2012 Warhorse football season, Zach received a letter inviting him to play with high school athletes from across the nation in the Buccaneer’s stadium.
“I was really excited for Zach, because I knew that only the best of the best play in that game, and coming from Devine, the exposure was awesome,” Coach Paul Gomez said.
4,200 athletes were invited to attend the combine where they went through series of drills and agilities that determined whether they qualified to play in the game. Out of those 4,200 athletes, only 96 made it through and made the team; including Devine’s own Zach Monreal.
“When I made the team I was shocked,” Zach said. “I was really excited about it, and the entire thing was a great experience.”
Once the 96 were selected, the group was divided into two teams, the North and the South. After two days on practice, Monreal was put on the South team and went on to win the game 33-18.
“Playing in this game was exciting because it was something different, and it gets you prepared for college life,” Zach said.
Zach plans to further his football career to the collegiate level, however he still remains undecided which school he will attend.
