Do’s and Don’ts of time management

March 4, 2015

All too often, teenagers find themselves stressing about how they can possibly get through the day and accomplish everything that needs to be done. When asked why they are stressing about that, the answers all centers on time. Time is a huge factor in almost everything one does, but how to properly manage that time is the real question.

Make a Plan

The first step to properly managing time is to create a plan. By creating a plan, there will now be a schedule to stick to so that the day can be competed efficiently. Start by prioritizing the jobs and tasks that need to be completed and put them in order from most important to least important. Then create an acceptable time frame to complete each task in.

Take Breaks

Trying to do all these tasks one after another can be draining. Taking quick breaks helps to relieve stress and focus the mind again. Go for a quick walk around the house or library. Get a snack and allow some time to enjoy it. Play a song or two before sitting back down and getting back to business.

Block Out Distractions

Prevent social media and other enticing games and activities from entering the work area. Getting on social networks on breaks creates a distraction that is hard to overcome. Listening to the TV or having it on makes it difficult to engage the brain on the task at hand. Create a bubble around the work area that will help keep distractions out and undivided attention in.

Don’t Procrastinate

Accomplishing every task on the list can sometimes be overwhelming and down right impossible. By having the tasks prioritized, those at the end of the list can be done the next day. Whatever happens, DON’T procrastinate. By allowing small breaks to refocus and remaining within the time limits, most, if not all the tasks on the list can be completed.

Don’t Slack Off

When it comes down to it, extra time is always welcome. Don’t use the extra time to have fun or slack off. The extra time should be used start the next task in case one runs over the allotted time frame. At the end of the day, the extra time can be used to relax. By not slacking off, more tasks will get completed and the sense of accomplishment will be higher.
