Tyler Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice, among other charges for the alleged assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Grey issued the “aggravating” charges during Robinson’s first virtual court appearance before a judge in the Utah Fourth District Court Tuesday, September 16th. Grey brought attention to Robinson’s threat to attendees, especially children, at Kirk’s speaking event at Utah Valley College. The state formally filed to seek the death penalty.
Robinson, who is now in custody in the Utah County Jail without bail, recently gave a press conference. Robinson read a 10-page indictment, periodically answering questions.
While Robinson’s direct motives remain unclear, investigators believe political beliefs and familial conflicting ideologies were significant motivations.
Several targets, bullet holes, and an engraved bullet were found in Robinson’s home. Messages between Robinson and his roommate, DNA evidence, and university surveillance footage were addressed. Robinson’s parents identified the shooter as him in the footage.
Attorney Greg Skordas is currently in the process of searching for firms to represent Robinson.
Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, was granted a pretrial protective order against Robinson by Judge Tony Graf. Miami-based attorney Jeffery Neiman filed a request on behalf of Erika Kirk that she be a designated representative in her late husband’s case.
The FBI is currently investigating over 7,000 leads as of Friday, September 12th. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the FBI is working with Discord, a free messaging and voice-chat platform, during his appearance before the House Judiciary Committee. Patel stated the FBI is investigating online chats affiliated with the gunman. According to Discord, the investigation found no evidence of Robinson planning the shooting or promoting violence.
Instructional class time resumed at Utah Valley University one week after the shooting.
