How much do students rely on their cellphones at school? This is the question Mrs. Rebecca Fitch’s environmental science classes are trying to answer. The students began talking about how much time any given person spends on their phone a day. This topic soon sparked an idea that became the current experiment the students are conducting.

“I’m really excited to start this project,” Mrs. Fitch said. “I think this will be a good way to show the students just how much they use their phones.”

The students will turn their phones in at the beginning of every day and they will be returned to the students at the end of the day. The experiment will be conducted for 5 days, but it is not mandatory. For the students that don’t participate, an alternate assignment about               technology usage will be assigned.

“I want the students to be aware of what they do in their spare time and recognize how much of that time is spent on their phones,” Mrs. Fitch said.

This can prove to be a difficult task for many students, but most are excited to see the results.

“I used to love reading,” junior India Garcia said. “I brought a book because I knew I would need something to do once I finished my work.”

Mrs. Fitch is hoping that this experiment will promote new interests in her students and inspire them to do things other than play on their phones all day. More information and the results for the experiment can be found on the online paper: thewarhorse.net.
