Anatomy classes disect pig hearts

Lives are being saved here at DHS, pig lives that is. During Mrs. Long’s anatomy classes, students are getting the chance to participate in a mock Open Heart Bypass Surgery.
“The mock surgery was challenging and exciting,” junior Joshua Broderick said. “I had a lot of fun getting to participate in this especially because we were in groups of two so we really got a full hands on experience.”
The students were asked to bypass the clot and make an incision near the aorta where they inserted a pipe cleaner (which represented a grafted vein) to keep the heart beating.
“I thought it was very interesting,” Gabriela Jew said. “The suturing was my favorite part, but getting to cut the heart open and see the artery was really cool too.”
