Football Fridays send school spirit soaring
September 8, 2014
“Are the Indians going to win the game tonight? Well no!” The students roar this cheer every Friday morning during the wake-up call that has become an honored tradition at DHS.
“The wake-up call was different from anything that the middle school has ever had, but I had a really exciting time,” freshman Cecily Guerrero said.
While the wake-up call is more of a mini pep rally, the real one takes place before lunch and runs a little longer. Along with performances from the band and cheerleaders, the students take pride in getting rowdy for the class yells.
“I was really excited to yell with my class, especially since we’re seniors this year,” senior Michaela Bean said. “The best part was when we won!”
The pep rallies aren’t always fun and games, however. Senior Roberto Guzman gave an inspiring speech that gave his team members and the entire student body something to cheer about.
“It’s not just a game to us, it’s a war,” Guzman said. “We promise you that we’ll go out there and play our best in that battle.”
He talked about his passion for the sport, and how the memories he’s been given with this team and his school will never be forgotten. He also has a personal goal set for his Warhorses and wants the school to know it.
“I want to get as far as the 2012 team, and go even further,” Guzman said.
With the support that they receive from the students, faculty, and the town, the Warhorses believe that they can meet their goals for this season. Until then, the cheers of fans will echo through the halls in support of their favorite team.
