After graduation, most high school graduates will never play sports again. So when Devine hosts the annual Alumni game and home run derby rolls around, everyone comes out.
“I think it’s a really fun thing for everyone,” Head coach George Villa said. “It’s cool to see the kids I coached come back with the same sense of competitiveness.”
Graduates dating back to 1977 all the way up to 2012 came out to participate this year. Christian Pompa, a 2008 graduate won the home run derby. In the game, the alumni jumped out early 8-0 in the 2nd inning. Midway through the game, the Warhorses finally showed some life, fighting back to make it 12-9 heading into the 7th inning. At that time, it was already too late for the comeback to happen. For the first time in three years, the alumni beat the Varsity.
“Between all the joking and trash talking from the older guys, the game was a lot of fun,” Junior Wyatt Sheff said. “Its disappointing that we lost, but it’s always a really fun experience.”
