The varsity Arabians currently stand in third place after completing the first round of district play with a record of 3-2. Devine stands behind Lytle and Hondo as they jump into the second round with determination to finish out with nothing but victories. The girls recently played Carrizo Springs and Hondo, and as of this past Tuesday, the Arabians will have already played Crystal City for the second time.
Despite losing a few players to sickness and injury, the Arabians were still able to take a big win over Carrizo Springs.
“We had several players who missed the Carrizo Springs game due to sickness and injury. This allowed other players the opportunity to play and gain some valuable varsity experience,” coach Jim Sessions said.
Scoring for the Arabians was Baylee Quisenberry scoring 10 points, Ashley Trivino 10, Kailee Ramirez 9, Lyandra Zulaica 8, Jodee Wofford 6, and Estefany Robledo 3. Rebounds came from Kailee who had 12, Estefany 7, Jodee 5, Cecilia Garza 5, Ashley 5, Baylee 4, and Lyandra 4.
“We got off to a slow start but we got going mid-way through the first quarter. We finished out the first half strong and kept the momentum going into the second half. In all, this was a good win for us,” Coach Sessions said.
Last Friday Hondo hosted the big rivalry match up between the Arabians and the Lady Owls. Although the start gave Devine high expectations of a win, the girls lost the their lead and were unable to regain it before the final buzzer.
We got off to a great start against Hondo. We shot the ball well early in the first quarter and had a nice early lead. We really struggled in the second quarter, however, we battled injuries and foul trouble the rest of the way and could never regain the lead,” coach Sessions said.
Despite the loss, the team worked very hard to strive for victory and came up short in the process. Through the battle, top scorer for Devine was Baylee with 17 points followed by Jodee with 7, Alyssa Schmidt 7, Kailee 3, Elyse Espinoza 2, Estefany 2, Lyandra 2, and Jordan Zapata 1. Rebounding for Devine was Estefany with 6, Alyssa 5, Kailee 4, Elyse 4, Jodee 3, and Jordan 3.
“The girls played hard and really competed but unfortunately came up a bit short,” Coach Sessions said.
The Arabians can be seen in their next game against Pearsall here in Devine this Friday January 25.
