To take over next year’s school spirit, DHS will soon be having cheerleading tryouts for the 2013-2014 school year. With 28 girls and one boy fighting for only 12 varsity and 8 JV spots, stress and tension can get high. Cheerleading isn’t just about putting on a uniform, bow and a smile; it takes long preparation and a lot of courage to go out on the floor. Regardless of the anxiety that tryout week brings, in the end, the honor of being named a Devine High School cheerleader overrides all the struggles made to get there.
“The week of tryouts is always scary and I’m always nervous, but all of the hard work pays off in the end. Even though it’s stressful, it’s so much fun,” freshman Kailee Ramirez said.
Incoming freshman are only allowed to make the JV squad, however, next years’ sophomores, juniors and seniors are all capable of taking a varsity position. With six veterans returning to tryouts and six seniors graduating, a new team will be stepping up to take over Devine cheerleading.
“Tryouts is an experience I couldn’t imagine high school without,” sophomore Alyssa Ramirez said. “I’m excited and ready to see what the outcome is!”
For this upcoming season, three junior cheerleaders will be trying out for their senior season. The girls eligible for leading next year’s squad will be returners Lexie Summerlin, Cynthia Ramirez, and Victoria Hernandez.
“I’m really nervous to be trying out for my senior year of cheerleading. It feels like just yesterday I was trying out for my junior year. I’m hoping everything works out and I can’t wait for the stress of the week to be over,” junior Cynthia Ramirez said.
Tryouts will be held at the high school this Friday, March 8.
