Oil is often referred to as liquid gold with no explanation needed. With the oil boom being so close to Devine, the school has felt the effect.
The oil field is a supply and demand kind of business. People move around to wherever the oil is, bringing their families with them.
“This is my seventh time moving because of the oil, I’m pretty used to it by now,” sophomore Paul Oldham said.
Moving means leaving old friends and schools behind and start over.
“I miss my friends at my old school,” sophomore Kutter Schmidt said. “But I do like this new school.”
Oil field workers come from all around the country to get their hand on that liquid gold. Moving from one area to another could be a major culture shock.
“Moving from the big city Dallas to an ‘itty bitty’ town like Devine was quite a bit different at first,” Schmidt said.
Quite of few kids end up following in their parents footsteps and joining the oil field themselves.
“I plan on being apart of the oil field when I grow up,” Oldham said. “M dad has been successful in it and he is someone I look up to.”
Devine has really been affected by the oil field in both the community and school. As more oil is discovered the bigger Devine will become.
