Summer Cinema Summary
September 26, 2022
Summer of 2022 had some of the best movies, and more are yet to come. We’ve collected some of our students and staff’s opinions and anticipations for this year’s movies.
The movie Top Gun Maverick released in theaters on May 27, starring Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick”, Miles Teller as Bradley “Rooster”, and Val Kilmer as Lt. Tom “Iceman”. After 30 years of service, Maverick must confront the ghost of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it. Opening weekend in Box Office Top Gun Maverick made $126.7 million in sales. Overall made $1.355 billion USD.
“I enjoyed Top Gun, it’s a blast from my past. When I was younger I saw the first original Top Gun,” Mark Feltner said. “My wife talked me into going in there, and I thought it was going to be bad. It was a whole new perspective,” Feltner added.
On July 24, Marvel studios dropped the teaser trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and of course it was a big rage. This movie will be the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it also will be in honor to Chadwick Boseman. There’s been a lot of controversy about who should take the place of King T’challa and take on as the Black Panther. The initial release date is November 11, 2022.
“I think Black Panther: Wakanda Forever it’s one of the most anticipated movies of Marvel, because of Chadwick Boseman. I know that I will be crying a lot, I could tell just by the trailer,” said junior Maya Hernandez.
The Black Phone opened June 24, and grossed $158.1 million. A supernatural horror movie set in 1978 and based on the 2004 short story by Joe Hill, the main character Finney has to find a way out of the grabbers basement, with the help of a disconnected phone.
“I thought the best part of the movie was when Finney finally escaped the basement of the Grabber, thankfully he was able to get out with the help of the previous kids,” said junior Zoe Ortiz.
There are still a large amount of movies that will come out within the month and the remainder of the year, some including; Don’t Worry Darling, Hocus Pocus 2, Halloween Ends, and Disenchanted.
